Geophysical Surveys – (for purposes of  borehole drilling site surveying or geotechnical surveys).

Geophysical surveys entail methods that use ground-based physical sensing techniques to produce a detail image or map of an area. Using appropriate tools and technology, Afrique Water and Geotechnical Services Ltd can distinguish between clays and fresh water through methods like Horizontal Electrical proofing –HEP (Wenner Configuration) and Vertical Electrical Soundings-VES (Schlumberger Configuration) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography. Other methods of geophysical surveys are also available depending on the client’s needs and other factors.

Hydrogeological Surveys

Our under-ground water level surveys entails abroad range of services like: Borehole site investigations; groundwater availability studies and management; water resources management; aquifer mapping and modeling; well-field designs; groundwater monitoring; aquifer studies. The company also conducts: Borehole condition assessment; groundwater recharge; groundwater quality assessment; determination of groundwater abstraction patterns and borehole density etc.

Borehole Condition Assessments and Hydrogeological Evaluation

This is done on problematic existing boreholes (located on either bulk or small/localized aquifers) to investigate the courses of such problems and the way forward to solve the problems or recommend alternatives to supplement the water supply among other pertinent recommendations, etc.

Aspects evaluated in this study include:

  • Borehole design and
  • Original and current borehole depth and water
  • Borehole water quality and hydrochemistry, water quantity.
  • Borehole location and its geological
  • Borehole water abstraction
  • Type and capacity of installed permanent pumping
  • Permanent pump intake levels, frequency of the installed pump
  • Borehole density and abstraction trends in the neighborhood, evaluation of area’s hydrogeology and aquifer
  • Client’s water demand over the years and daily pumping regimes.
  • Available initial and subsequent test pumping data,
  • Aquifer
  • Aquifer mineral
  • Geological setting and groundwater recharge/discharge mechanisms.
  • Saline water intrusion (in coastal belts).
  • Hydrology and land
  • Climatology

Aquifer Studies

Our services entail studying of water flow in aquifers (a body of permeable rock which can contain or transmits groundwater) and the characterization of aquifers. The services are: aquifer modelling; determination of aquifer characteristics and types; aquifer size/ location and depth; groundwater quality and hydrochemistry; abstraction patterns and aquifer depletion; groundwater recharge; saline water intrusion; aquifer contamination etc.

Borehole Site Investigations

We conduct investigation of suitable sites for drilling boreholes or shallow wells in accordance with the Water Resources Authority (WRA) – Kenya Requirements (for Kenyan based projects) or other requirements as per other country’s regulations.

Borehole Drilling Supervision and Management

AWGS Ltd offers the following services:

  • Assist clients in the process of applying for necessary borehole drilling permits/authorization letters/ licenses from the Water Resources Authority (WRA) and National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to enable drilling to commence. (for Kenyan based projects).
  • Preparation of Drilling Technical Specifications, borehole drilling Bill of Quantities (BOQs), conditions of borehole drilling contract, drilling tendering and tender evaluation (to select suitable drilling contractors).
  • Supervision of Borehole Drilling and construction/ installation works, Development, Test Pumping and installation of permanent pumping
  • Analysis of test Pumping data and selection of suitable borehole pumps for
  • Inspection of contractor’s work and Certification of contractor’s Bill of Quantities (BOQs).
  • Geological
  • Geophysical logging (where required).
  • Water quality assessment and
  • Supervision of installation works for permanent pumping plants, testing and commissioning of projects to
  • Preparation of borehole drilling and completion reports etc.

Geological Surveys/ Assessment

The company conducts examination of a project area/ geographical location to determine the character, relations, distribution, mode or origin of its mineral resources and rock masses. The evaluation aspects entails: Lithology; petrology; structural geology; mineralogy; economic geology; geological history and timescale; stratigraphy; geomorphology; soils; vegetation; wetlands; drainage and paleo-channels; agro minerals; hydrogeology; water quality; climatology and paleo-climates; oceanography (for coastal projects); assessment/ analysis of geological logs and geophysical logs; assessment/interpretation of satellite images and geological maps etc.

Geotechnical Surveys and Engineering Geological Works

Done to determine suitability for foundations of various engineering works, e.g. foundations, road construction, dam construction, injection boreholes, construction of infiltration galleries for subsurface storage of water in some geological terrains, in including depth to bedrock surveys, rock profiling and geo-tomography by use of resistivity and induced polarization methods.

This study also includes hydrological data processing and analysis; development and management of a hydrological information system for operational and planning; Reservoir Water Balance Management for hydropower production and planning; feasibility studies for potential hydropower projects; Computer Reservoir Simulation to determine hydro capability “(energy and capacity) during yearly formulation of the Least Cost Power Expansion Planning; monthly, quarterly and yearly hydro production capability planning based on forecasted inflows and weather forecast reports; Annual energy projection planning; Liaison with relevant agencies involved in collection and provision of hydro-meteorological data and weather forecast reports; surface water assessments (planning and design of hydro-meteorological network, installation, operation and  maintenance;  data  collection,  processing  and analysis, preparation of technical maps and  reports;); and hydro-meteorological data processing and analysis for planning and design of water development projects.

Project Evaluation

Evaluation of water, sanitation and hygiene projects e.g. community based end-term evaluations, mid-term evaluations, and participatory projects. The evaluated aspects include design and construction of water projects, value for money and efficiency of implementation, community participation and the impact of training on water hygiene and sanitation, capacity building on and public health. In addition, evaluation of community capacity building on project operation, maintenance/ management and water borne diseases/ water hygiene and sanitation. Aspects to be verified in evaluation include physical and complimentary training programme/ capacity building output of the project, results and related indicators through discussions with stakeholders, numerous interviews with target groups such as community leaders, project members and general beneficiaries of the water projects, inspection of project documentation, consultation of relevant coordination and implementation staff among other resources.

Water Quality Assessment and Monitoring

Monitoring of both groundwater and surface water resources from the available water points, boreholes, surface water bodies, geological and hydrogeological settings, etc. for purposes of qualitatively determining exploitable water resources in a given area.
